Posture Problems and Back Pain
Specialists in Sports & Spinal Injuries Treatment, Headache, Neck, Back, Whiplash Injury Treatment Specialists.
There are a number of everyday posture habits which can contribute to back pain and other ailments. These can be addressed by consciously correcting posture and retraining your body in order to relieve discomfort and protect your back In the long run. Initially correcting your posture may feel awkward or unnatural, as your body will have grown used to sitting or standing incorrectly. Muscle imbalance can be improved using a system of strength and stretching exercises, which will eventually result in good posture becoming second nature.
Tightness in your lower back and hip flexors, and weakness in core muscles, buttocks and hamstrings can often lead to hyperlordosis. This is indicated by a deep curve in the lower back and a posterior which juts out. This problem is frequently caused by having extra weight in the stomach area, wearing high heels or pregnancy. This issue can be largely addressed or alleviated by a combination of core and buttock strengthening exercises.
Another posture problem produced by muscle imbalances is the flat back, which presents as a stooping position. Usually with this issue, the head and neck will also sometimes jut out to the front causing strain to the upper back and neck. The pelvis is tilted forward and the lower back is straight as opposed to naturally curved. A flat back can be exacerbated by sitting or standing for long periods, and is typically associated with core and hamstring tightness, and weakness in the lower back, quadriceps and buttocks. Other common habits relating to bad posture include leaning on one hip, crossing the legs, rounding the shoulders, poking the chin out and hunching the back.
