Joint & Muscular Pain Relief from

Whitley Bay Osteopathic Centre – Your Health in Our Hands

The Whitley Bay Osteopathic Centre is a specialist clinic in the North East of England for the treatment of back pain, headaches, sports injuries, repetitive strain injuries, and postural problems.

We would like to thank the Headache & Migraine Specialists network for inviting us to promote our services on their website.

What is Osteopathy? – Whitley Bay, Newcastle, Northumberland

Osteopathy recognises the fact that the body is an integrated system where problems in one area can lead to pain in other areas. The musculo-skeletal framework supports the vital organs, the neural system and the overall balance of the body. Any misalignment or strain in the muscles or joints may be reflected in pain in the damaged area or referred pain elsewhere. This can be particularly true of headaches and migraines which often originate in muscular problems in the neck or shoulders.

Osteopathy is a ‘hands on’ treatment. Osteopathic techniques improve mobility, relax muscles, aid fluid drainage and stabilise the body. Osteopathy is highly effective in the treatment of most muscular and skeletal conditions including:

  • Back Pain & Spinal Problems
  • Headaches & Migraine
  • Sciatica
  • Childhood Problems & ‘Growing Pains’
  • Joint Pain & Arthritis
  • Sports Injuries
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries
  • Postural problems including during pregnancy

Osteopathy Referral & Assessment – Gateshead, North Shields, Tynemouth

All osteopaths should be registered with the General Osteopathic Council. Osteopathy is available in some areas through the NHS and the Whitley Bay Osteopathic Centre regularly accepts referrals from GPs, health clinicians and other therapists. Osteopathic treatments are also covered by all major private healthcare companies – including BUPA, PPP, WPA & Norwich Union – usually subject to referral from a GP.

At the Whitley Bay Osteopathic Centre, many of our clients come to us following recommendations from friends and family.

Our therapists begin by taking a full medical history. Age and lifestyle play a significant role in determining the treatment method. Joints, muscles and posture are examined and we will assess active and passive movements, reflexes, and carry out neurological tests. At all stages the osteopath will explain what is happening, discuss the tests and the results and outline the treatment that will help. Occasionally the osteopath may refer a patient back to the GP for further tests.

Assuming the condition is suitable for osteopathic intervention, a short treatment is carried out on the first visit.

Osteopathic Treatment – South Shields, Jarrow, Sunderland

The Whitley Bay Osteopathic Centre
Osteopathic treatment varies from patient to patient. It is a ‘hands on’ therapy that ranges from the light touch for cranial osteopathy to the more dramatic joint manipulation of high velocity thrust (HVT) treatment. More common for most people is the comfortable stretching of muscles and ligaments in and around the affected areas.

Treatments are tailored to the patient. There may be some soreness where joint and muscle manipulation has increased mobility but any tenderness should not last more than 24 hours.

The clicking sound many people associate with osteopathy can occur during HVT manipulation. All joints contain synovial fluid which eases the movement of bones in the joint. If the joint becomes jarred, or the surrounding muscles go into spasm, the bones are forced together, squeezing the synovial fluid to the edges. This can create a suction effect similar to two wet plates sticking together. It is the sudden release of pressure when HVT stretches the joint to allow the synovial fluid to return that causes the infamous clicking sound.

Osteopathic treatment sessions typically last for 30 minutes during which time the osteopath will prescribe stretching and joint manipulation exercises to be carried out by patients between sessions. The majority of Whitley Bay Osteopathic Centre patients see a marked improvement in their symptoms within three or four sessions.

Osteopathy, Physiotherapy & Chiropractice

Many people are still unfamiliar with osteopathy, or confuse osteopathy with physiotherapy, massage or chiropractice. Physiotherapy gives an effective assessment of symptoms but often relies on physical equipment in the diagnosis and treatment of physical problems. Massage is an effective treatment for muscle strain, tension and rehabilitation from physical injuries but there is less attention given to posture and the impact on other physical symptoms or conditions. Chiropractors typically focus on the alignment of the skeleton and less on the muscles and other soft tissues and sessions tend to be of a shorter duration than osteopathy.
